Freetown, Sierra Leone – Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, the Mayor of Freetown, has been awarded the prestigious 2024 German Africa Prize by the German Africa Foundation.
The award honors individuals who have made exceptional contributions to democracy, peace, human rights, and sustainable development across the African continent.
In response to receiving the accolade, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr expressed her gratitude, saying, “I have been informed that the award will be delivered in person by the President of the Bundestag in Berlin on October 16th. I dedicate this award to my teams, colleagues, and Freetonians. It reflects our combined efforts to #TransformFreetown and #TransformLives.”
The German Africa Foundation, a non-partisan organization, has been recognizing remarkable achievements in Africa since 1993, with a focus on contributions in research, culture, and societal issues.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr’s recognition underscores her ongoing dedication to transforming Freetown and improving the lives of its residents.
Aki-Sawyerr, born in Sierra Leone, has lived in several countries including Ghana, before returning to her homeland. After completing her studies, she spent over 25 years as a financial expert and auditor in London. Her involvement in Sierra Leone’s public sector began during the 2014-2015 Ebola epidemic, where she played a crucial role. In June 2023, she was reelected for a second term as mayor, reflecting her popularity and the positive impact of her initiatives.
This award highlights Aki-Sawyerr’s continued efforts to drive sustainable development and social change in Freetown, making her one of Sierra Leone’s most distinguished public figures.
