Sierra Leone’s U-20 national team, the Shooting Stars, delivered a landmark performance at the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, defeating host nations Egypt 4-1 to claim their first-ever victory in the tournament.
Despite Egypt’s early dominance in possession, Sierra Leone’s defense held firm. An initial goal for the Shooting Stars was disallowed for offside after a VAR review. Egypt capitalized just before halftime with a powerful strike from Kabaka, giving them a 1-0 lead.
The second half saw a remarkable turnaround. Momoh Kamara netted two goals in quick succession, the first aided by a delayed reaction from Egyptian goalkeeper Abdelmonem Tamer, and the second a stunning shot into the top corner. A handball in the box led to a penalty, which Sierra Leone converted to extend their lead. Kamara completed his hat-trick late in the match, sealing a historic win for Sierra Leone.
This victory comes after Sierra Leone’s goalless draw against Zambia in their opening match, bringing their total points to four in the tournament.
The Shooting Stars’ performance has been lauded as a significant achievement in their debut AFCON U-20 campaign.
