Freetown, Sierra Leone – April 9, 2026 — The Court of Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU) has placed the institution’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Dr. Philip John Kanu (Associate Professor), on interim suspension following allegations of irregularities linked to staff recruitment processes.
According to an official statement from the Chancellor’s Office, the action was taken after the Court reviewed findings from a specially constituted Sub-Committee tasked with examining concerns surrounding recent recruitment exercises.
The report reportedly identified significant issues that required prompt administrative intervention.
Citing Section 15(1)(a) of the Universities Act No. 5 of 2021, and in line with consultations with the Minister as provided for under Section 7(2)(d), the Court resolved that the temporary suspension was necessary in order to safeguard the integrity and effective functioning of the University while disciplinary procedures continue.
As part of the directive, Dr. Kanu has been instructed to transfer all official responsibilities and institutional property to Dr. Mohamed Ali, who has been appointed to oversee the University’s operations in an acting capacity during the period of suspension.
The order further prohibits Dr. Kanu from carrying out any official duties or engaging in activities that could influence ongoing administrative processes or personnel connected to the investigation.
University authorities emphasised that the decision does not imply a final determination of wrongdoing, noting that Dr. Kanu retains the right to respond to the allegations and present representations before the Court as the process unfolds.
The development comes at a time when MMTU continues to implement governance reforms under the Universities Act, with observers suggesting the move reflects efforts to reinforce accountability and transparency within the institution’s leadership framework.
