In a proactive move, Mr. Mohamed Rahman Swaray, the Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, undertook a comprehensive evaluation of the conditions and well-being of workers stationed at the National Stadium Rehabilitation site in Freetown.
This strategic action comes amidst escalating concerns voiced by the Indigenous Workers’ Union, a representative body safeguarding the rights of Sierra Leonean laborers engaged in the project. The focal points of concern raised by the union pertain to workplace conditions and the safety of workers operating on the site.
Engaging with pertinent stakeholders including the Ministry of Sports, overseeing the rehabilitation project, and the managerial team of the GANSU Construction Company, the Chinese firm in charge of the endeavor, Minister Swaray orchestrated discussions to address these pressing issues. Integral aspects of the discourse encompassed matters such as adherence to the national minimum wage standards, access to medical facilities for employees, provision of adequate personal protective equipment, and the mode of remuneration.
Minister Swaray expounded to the workforce that it falls within his purview to guarantee their safety and ensure their fair compensation.
Aligning with the mission of His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s administration to foster dignified labor conditions for all citizens, the minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to elevating the quality of employment opportunities.
“The bedrock of our nation is its people. President Bio is unswervingly dedicated to enhancing our human capital, recognizing the populace as our most valuable asset. I am here to address your concerns promptly and assure you that we are steadfast in safeguarding your welfare,” stated Mr. Swaray, allaying anxieties among the workers.
Furthermore, he provided guidance, urging the labor force to fulfill their responsibilities diligently and observe punctuality in attendance.
Minister Swaray expressed his intent to conduct regular visits to the rehabilitation site, underscoring his dedication to monitoring the progression of improvements and ensuring the welfare of workers remains a top priority.
