In a decisive move against the smuggling and abuse of dangerous drugs, Magistrate Joseph Toby of the Kambia District Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a 20-year-old Alhassan Turay, to 45 months imprisonment for unlawful possession of suspected Kush.
According to court proceedings, Turay, a resident of Massama Road behind the Kambia District Lorry Park, was arrested on 14th October 2025 by the Kambia Police Operations Team led by Inspector Nelson Jabba.
He was found in possession of 100 wraps of dried green leaves suspected to be Kush.
The matter was investigated by the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU), which charged Turay to court for unlawful possession of a prohibited substance.
During his first court appearance, the accused pleaded guilty and begged for mercy. His bail request was denied, and he was remanded at the Kambia District Correctional Centre for one week. Upon reappearing before the court, Turay again pleaded guilty. Based on the evidence presented, Magistrate Toby convicted him and handed down a 45-month custodial sentence at the same facility.
Delivering his ruling, Magistrate Toby, who also serves as a Peace Ambassador, reaffirmed his commitment to impartial and firm judgments, particularly in drug-related cases.
The conviction underscores the judiciary’s ongoing efforts to curb the proliferation and consumption of dangerous drugs such as Kush, Tramadol, and Cannabis Sativa across the Kambia District.
