Sierra Leone mourns the loss of one of its football icons as former Leone Stars defender Abu ‘Syrian’ Bangura passed away yesterday 13 September 2023.
Renowned for his exceptional skills and gentlemanly demeanor, Bangura leaves behind a legacy that will forever be etched in the annals of Sierra Leonean football history.
Hailing from Kissy, Abu Bangura embarked on his football journey as a student at Independent Secondary School. It was here that his talent began to shine, setting the stage for an illustrious career.
His initial professional venture saw him don the colors of Division Three side Caxton, earning him the affectionate moniker ‘Yellow Man’ during his early days on the pitch.
However, it was during his time with Bolton (later known as Freetown Unite) that Bangura truly flourished, showcasing his brilliance on the field. Yet, his pinnacle moment arrived when he signed with Real Republicans, where his performance earned him a coveted spot in the national team.
Leading by example, Bangura captained the Leone Stars in the mid-70s, becoming a symbol of inspiration for aspiring footballers.
Abu ‘Syrian’ Bangura concluded his professional journey with Real Republicans, sharing the pitch with other football luminaries such as Brima Mazolla Kamara and Jebbor Sherrington. His contributions to the sport and his leadership qualities will be sorely missed not only by his close relatives but also by the entire Sierra Leonean football family.
In his memory, Sierra Leone reflects on the indomitable spirit and skill of a true football legend.
