Freetown, Sierra Leone – February 22, 2025 – The Judiciary of Sierra Leone has defended the Court of Appeal’s decision to issue a bench warrant for the arrest of former presidential aspirant Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray, following his failure to appear for an appeal hearing on February 20.
The warrant, issued by presiding Justice John Bosco Allieu, was prompted by the absence of Mansaray, his legal representatives, and his sureties in court. The prosecution, led by AJM Bockarie, argued that this absence was a direct violation of court procedures, leading to the warrant’s issuance under Rule 53, sub-rules 5 and 6 of the Court.
The move has sparked political controversy, with Mansaray and his supporters alleging that the government is targeting him due to his outspoken stance against alleged government connections to drug trafficking.
In a statement on social media, Mansaray claimed, “They’re coming after me so they can continue their cocaine trade and use Sierra Leone as a hub. I just happen to be standing in their way.”
However, the Judiciary’s official spokesperson, Moses Kamara, dismissed these allegations, emphasizing that the court operates independently of political influence.
In an interview with Liberty Online TV, Kamara clarified that the court’s actions were strictly based on legal principles.
“The Court does not try politicians; the court tries individuals who have been accused of certain wrongdoings or crimes,” Kamara stated.
He further explained that Mansaray was convicted in 2021 for sexual offenses involving a minor and was granted bail due to health concerns while appealing his sentence.
Kamara detailed the legal process leading to the bench warrant, noting that Mansaray’s appeal was scheduled for February 20.
“The appeal hearing between the State and Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray was set, and all judicial officers, including the state counsel and prosecution, were present. However, the accused, his lawyers, and sureties failed to appear,” he stated.
As a result, the Court of Appeal deemed it necessary to issue a bench warrant for his arrest, ensuring compliance with judicial procedures. Kamara reaffirmed that the judiciary remains committed to upholding the rule of law without political bias.
Mansaray’s legal team has yet to respond to Kamara’s statements, while speculation continues over the political undertones of the case. Meanwhile, authorities have yet to confirm whether efforts are underway to enforce the bench warrant.
