Freetown, April 2, 2025 – The highly anticipated return of the Lantern Parade in Sierra Leone has been suspended indefinitely due to security concerns.
During the Ministry of Information and Civic Education’s weekly press conference on Tuesday, Abdulai Caulker, the National Security Coordinator at the Office of National Security (ONS), explained that authorities are prioritizing national security, particularly in light of the lingering threat posed by fugitives from the failed coup attempt of November 26, 2024.
He emphasized that while Sierra Leone remains at a Level One security status—indicating no immediate threats—precautionary measures are being reinforced across the country.
“The security sector is not willing to take any risks at this time,” Caulker stated, urging citizens to remain calm and continue with their daily activities.
The Lantern Parade is one of Sierra Leone’s most cherished cultural events, traditionally held during national celebrations, particularly on Independence Day. The parade features elaborate, illuminated lantern structures crafted by different communities, often depicting historical and cultural themes. It is a vibrant display of artistry, competition, and national pride, drawing thousands of spectators onto the streets of Freetown and other major cities.
The event had been suspended for several years due to political and security concerns, and recent reports of its possible return had sparked public excitement. Speculation about its revival grew after a leaked government memo suggested that discussions were being held on the matter. However, Caulker clarified that the government had never officially announced its return.
While the suspension has disappointed many Sierra Leoneans, authorities maintain that ensuring national stability is paramount. Government officials have assured the public that security remains a top priority and that any decision regarding large public gatherings will be made with safety in mind.
The announcement has prompted mixed reactions, with some citizens expressing understanding over the need for caution, while others lament the continued absence of one of the nation’s most beloved traditions.
The government has not provided a timeline for when the parade might resume but reaffirmed its commitment to reviewing the security situation periodically.
