The Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources, in collaboration with the National Minerals Agency (NMA), has issued a statement addressing reports of an alleged mining incident in Kumoroh, Nimikoro Chiefdom, Kono District.
According to the joint release dated 31st October 2025, preliminary investigations indicate that the individuals involved were engaged in unauthorized mining activities, disregarding established safety and environmental regulations.
The Ministry noted that there has been no official confirmation of any deaths or injuries resulting from the reported incident.
Authorities expressed concern over the persistence of illegal mining despite numerous warnings and enforcement efforts.
They emphasized that such practices not only endanger lives but also cause significant damage to local communities and the environment.
The Ministry and the NMA reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with the Sierra Leone Police, the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, and other security partners to strengthen law enforcement and curb illegal mining operations across the country.
