FREETOWN – The Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) have rolled out a new nighttime electricity schedule for the capital this week, citing sharply reduced generation at the Bumbuna Hydroelectric Power Station and constraints from other supply sources.
Officials described the temporary arrangement as a fair-share measure to keep the lights on for as many households as possible during peak evening hours. The plan divides Freetown into six service zones, with each receiving power on a rotating basis over the coming nights.
The affected zones and their coverage areas are:
– Central: Savage Square to St. John
– East: Upgun to Jui
– Far East: Jui to Waterloo
– Mountain Rural: Wilberforce to Bathurst
– West: Congo Cross to Lumley Regent Road
– Far West: Juba to Sussex
The schedule takes effect from Monday, 16 March through Sunday, 22 March 2026. Residents are being asked to check the detailed daily timetable, expected to be published shortly by EDSA, and to plan accordingly.
Power users in the capital have been urged to conserve energy, charge devices during the day where possible, and stay tuned to official EDSA channels for any last-minute adjustments as engineers continue efforts to stabilise supply across the city.
