Freetown, 5 May 2025 — The Freetown City Council (FCC) has announced it will begin removing unauthorized billboards, posters, banners, and signages across the city starting Friday, 9th May 2025.
This move follows directives from the Ministry of Information and Civic Education and a stakeholder meeting chaired by the Office of the Chief Minister.
In a statement issued on Monday, the FCC confirmed that the operation is in line with Statutory Instrument No. 4 of 2010 – The Freetown City Council Statutory Nuisance Byelaws, 2010. The campaign is being undertaken in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Sierra Leone Police, and the Sierra Leone Roads Authority.
“The enforcement is a necessary step to restore public order and reduce visual pollution within the municipality,” FCC stated. “We are acting under clear government directives and in partnership with other state institutions.”
The Council warned individuals and businesses to either remove their unauthorized advertising materials or immediately regularize them by contacting the FCC’s Billboards and Banners Unit.
“Entities must obtain the necessary permits in accordance with our guidelines,” the Council added. “The revenue from these permits is crucial for the delivery of basic municipal services.”
FCC also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the inter-agency technical team that is reviewing broader regulatory measures for urban governance.
This latest public notice reiterates an earlier warning issued by the FCC on 11th November 2024 and echoes the Ministry’s recent directive dated 2nd May 2025.
