In a riveting courtroom spectacle, Morlai Conteh, a technical officer at Pademba Road Correctional Centre, has unveiled a chilling narrative of a night marred by intimidation, gunfire, and bedlam.
Taking the stand as the twenty-second prosecution witness in a high-stakes trial, Conteh’s testimony peeled back the layers of the terrifying ordeal endured by prison personnel during the savage assault of November 2023.
Under the meticulous scrutiny of state prosecutor Aruna Jalloh, Conteh meticulously recounted his duties as a carpenter and technical officer at the Male Correctional Centre in Pademba Road, Freetown.
He painstakingly delineated the events of November 25, 2023, a night overshadowed by an inmate populace of one thousand, nine hundred and nineteen, including those condemned to life behind bars.
Conteh vividly described encountering O.C. Brown, who orchestrated the deployment of officers, before retreating to his office around 1:00 am.
He disclosed that amidst the blaring music outside the center, he remained oblivious to the initial gunfire reported by a colleague around 3:00 am. However, as the cacophony of gunshots intensified, Conteh found solace in the presence of armed security personnel stationed outside.
Yet, the illusion of security shattered when, around 7:00 am, thunderous gunfire rattled the vicinity, drawing closer to the heart of the center. Conteh recounted the spine-chilling moment when an unidentified voice demanded access to the main entrance, menacingly threatening retribution if denied. Fleeing to a concealed refuge for safety, Conteh bore witness to the assailants’ relentless onslaught on the gate, their relentless barrage punctuated by the eerie silence of unlocked cell doors and the exodus of inmates.
Recounting his harrowing ordeal, Conteh, a seasoned correctional officer with twenty-one years of service, detailed the haunting echoes of gunfire reverberating within the center, accompanied by the ominous sounds of cell blocks yielding to the intruders’ onslaught. Upon emerging from his hideout, Conteh confronted the grim reality of widespread escape among the inmates, with only a handful remaining incarcerated in the condemned block.
Remarkably, Conteh’s testimony faced no cross-examination from the legal representatives of the twelve accused individuals. Nonetheless, state prosecutor Aruna Jalloh petitioned Justice Komba Kamanda for an adjournment, citing the indisposition of their next witness.
Consequently, Justice Kamanda rescheduled proceedings for Monday, April 8, 2024, ensuring the full participation of all parties in this gripping trial of justice.
