In a somber funeral service held at the Palace de Peuple, Conakry, the remains of 25 victims, including eight Sierra Leonean nationals, were honored amidst grief and gratitude.
Draped in Sierra Leone’s national colors, the bodies were a poignant reminder of lives lost in the recent depot explosion.
Despite the tragedy, a glimmer of unity emerged as a representative of the Sierra Leonean victims expressed gratitude to Guinean authorities for their unwavering support, transcending national boundaries.
Led by President Mamadi Doumbouya, the interfaith funeral service on February 2 witnessed dignitaries, including the President of the National Transition Council, Dr. Dansa Kourouma, paying respects to the departed.
Both Muslim and Christian clergies offered solace through sermons and prayers, soothing the collective anguish caused by the devastating explosion in Kaloum district, Conakry’s bustling hub.
The explosion in the business and administrative district of Kaloum in the heart of the Guinean capital led to a huge fire that destroyed what is the country’s largest oil depot, causing serious shortage of fuel, with negative consequences for the economy. Several houses were also destroyed.
Yet, amidst mourning, discontent brewed among residents whose homes were ravaged by the inferno. Criticism mounted over the government’s response, culminating in a protest disrupting Kaloum’s arteries, underscoring unfulfilled promises of aid and reconstruction.
As placards bore witness to their plight and kitchen utensils symbolized displaced lives, the aftermath of the tragedy echoed beyond the solemnity of the funeral, demanding swift action and empathetic leadership in the face of adversity..
