Freetown, June 30, 2025 — The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has confirmed it is actively investigating serious allegations of sexual misconduct involving a teacher at Basharia Islamic Primary School in Fourah Bay, Freetown.
According to an official statement released today, the incident involves two pupils from Class Four and has already been reported to the police.
The accused teacher has been suspended and is currently in custody while investigations are underway.
“We want to reassure the public that the pupils involved have been examined and are confirmed to be safe and under appropriate protection,” the Ministry said in the statement.
MBSSE reiterated its firm stance against any form of abuse in schools. “We maintain an unwavering zero-tolerance stance on School-Related Gender-Based Violence (SRGBV). Schools must be safe spaces—free from fear, abuse, or exploitation,” the statement emphasized. “Any violation of a child’s rights within an educational setting is unacceptable and will be addressed with the full weight of the law.”
The Ministry is working closely with national partners, including the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, the Ministry of Social Welfare, the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, to ensure a survivor-centered and coordinated response. Law enforcement and school authorities are also actively involved in the case.
In light of this incident and others like it, MBSSE announced plans to launch a nationwide, multi-sectoral dialogue on SRGBV.
“This forum will bring together professionals and policymakers across education, justice, child protection, and community systems,” the Ministry noted. “With support from international partners such as the World Bank, FCDO, the European Union, and Irish Aid, we are advancing safeguarding mechanisms to protect children across the country.”
The Ministry urged the public to remain calm and patient as investigations continue.
“We are committed to full transparency while safeguarding the dignity and well-being of the children involved,” the statement concluded.
