The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff (CCDS) wrapped up their 42nd Ordinary Meeting in Abuja, with renewed dedication to safeguarding democratic governance, peace, and stability across the region.
The gathering, held from August 7th to 9th, 2024, saw the Defence Chiefs emphasize the importance of collective action in addressing the ongoing security challenges in West Africa, particularly in Sierra Leone.
One of the key highlights of the meeting was the discussion on the state of readiness of the ECOWAS Logistics Depot at Lungi, Sierra Leone. The Depot, which is now over 90 percent complete, is expected to play a crucial role in the logistical support for ECOWAS missions in the region.
“The readiness of the Lungi Depot is a significant milestone for us,” said General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff of Nigeria and Chairman of the CCDS. “It is a testament to our collective resolve to ensure that we are fully prepared to address any security threats in our region.”
The Defence Chiefs also focused on the upcoming deployment of an ECOWAS Security Mission to Sierra Leone, as mandated by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government during their 64th Ordinary Summit in December 2023.
The mission, which will consist of 1,200 personnel, aims to stabilize the country and support its security forces.
“Our commitment to Sierra Leone is unwavering,” said H.E. Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security. “We are prepared to provide the necessary resources and support to ensure peace and stability in the country.”
The meeting also addressed the broader issue of terrorism in the region, with the Defence Chiefs reiterating their commitment to the activation of the ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF).
An immediate priority is the establishment of a 1,650-man Counter-Terrorism Brigade, as part of a larger 5,000-man force.
“No single nation can combat terrorism alone,” General Musa noted. “Our strength lies in our unity and our shared determination to protect our people and our way of life.”
In a show of solidarity, the Defence Chiefs visited Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who commended their efforts and reiterated the ECOWAS Authority’s commitment to providing the necessary resources for their mission.
“Your dedication to the security and democratic values of our region is commendable,” President Tinubu stated. “We stand with you in ensuring the safety and stability of West Africa.”
The meeting concluded with a visit to the Nigerian National Counterterrorism Center, where the Defence Chiefs discussed ways to enhance collaboration and strengthen partnerships in the fight against terrorism.
As ECOWAS moves forward with its plans, the focus remains on maintaining peace and stability in Sierra Leone and across the region, with the Lungi Logistics Depot poised to play a pivotal role in these efforts.
