Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Information and Civic Education, Yusuf Keketoma Sandi has cautioned the legal representative of former President Ernest Bai Koroma amid treason charges levied against him.
In a recent social media post, the Deputy Minister urged caution, stating, “As lawyers, we are always advised to resist the temptation of mixing the LAW and POLITICS in cases before the Court.”
Sandi emphasized the importance of the preliminary investigation procedure, highlighting that it allows the accused to present their side and call witnesses.
Sandi criticized those prematurely labeling the charges as “trumped-up charges under a political vendetta,” calling it not only premature but also an attempt to politicize and sensationalize the case.
He reminded all to be guided by the legal maxim: “Nemo est supra leges” (No one is above the laws).
On Thursday, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, lawyer for former President Ernest Bai Koroma, vehemently refuted the charges against his client, questioning the legality of the investigation process.
The former President faces a four-count indictment, including treason and harboring fugitives, stemming from an alleged attempt to overthrow Sierra Leone’s government on November 26, 2023.
Kamara raised concerns about the lack of concrete evidence presented during 40 hours of interrogation, stressing the absence of specific accusations.
He deemed the entire process “ridiculous” and expressed concern over dragging a democratically elected former president into such charges.
Kamara’s comments have sparked debate about the fairness and transparency of the legal proceedings. The alleged lack of concrete evidence adds fuel to speculation about potential political motives behind the investigation, raising questions about the validity of the charges against the former president.
