Freetown, Sierra Leone – The College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) at the University of Sierra Leone has forcefully refuted an audio message circulating on social media, which falsely claims the institution engaged in religious discrimination against a female student.
In an official statement issued on 17 June 2024, COMAHS voiced significant concern over the audio, describing it as a calculated attempt to damage the college’s reputation.
The administration clarified that the incident in question, which involved clarifying the dress code for medical students, occurred in January 2024 and was swiftly addressed with input from the College of Medicine Muslim Jamaat (COMMUJ), an established Islamic student group.
Contrary to the audio’s allegations, the college confirmed that the student involved has continued her studies without any issues.
COMAHS reiterated its steadfast commitment to religious tolerance, academic freedom, and the maintenance of peace within the institution.
Emphasizing its long-standing policy of non-discrimination on the basis of tribe, race, color, or religion, COMAHS highlighted that these values are core to the institution and align with the nation’s broader ethos of tolerance.
The public was urged to dismiss the audio’s unfounded claims, which the college stated were intended to incite discord.
In closing, COMAHS reaffirmed its dedication to fairness and inclusivity among its students and staff, calling on all stakeholders to support the truth and foster harmony within the college community and beyond.
