Freetown—The Opposition Chief Whip in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara, has sounded the alarm over reports that staff quarters belonging to Fourah Bay College (FBC) are being sold, warning that the move threatens the future of higher education in Sierra Leone.
In a recent statement, Hon. Kamara described the alleged sale as “indefensible,” insisting the properties are state assets and must remain in the public domain.
“These quarters do not belong to individuals; they belong to the people of Sierra Leone,” he said. “Selling them undermines public interest and erodes the learning environment of one of West Africa’s oldest universities.”
The university administration has reportedly stated that the quarters are being offered to former staff members. However, the Chief Whip rejected that explanation, arguing that the decision “goes against the will of the citizens” and should be resisted.
Hon. Kamara further criticized the government for what he called a lack of foresight, claiming there are no concrete plans to replace or maintain such vital assets.
“If this trend continues, all government properties risk being mortgaged,” he warned.
He urged the Ministry of Higher Education and other relevant authorities to intervene immediately to safeguard the integrity of Fourah Bay College and protect future generations of students.
