FREETOWN — Member of Parliament for Bumpe–Ngao Chiefdom, Hon. Charles D. Abdulai, has dismissed allegations linking him to an alleged assault on former Inspector General of Police, Michael Ambrose Sovula, describing the claims as false and driven by political motives.
The lawmaker was reacting to a media report which accused him of masterminding an attack on the former police chief at the Bo Police Station on 5 January 2026.
Hon. Abdulai said he was at the station in his official capacity to lodge a complaint over an alleged case of torture involving religious leaders and residents from his constituency.
He rejected assertions that he hurled stones or struck the former IGP with a mobile phone, arguing that the accusations lack credibility.
According to the MP, a tense situation arose when Mr. Sovula arrived at the station accompanied by several individuals, but he maintained that no assault was carried out by him.
Hon. Abdulai further linked the allegations to ongoing disputes following the recent Paramount Chieftaincy election in Bumpe–Ngao Chiefdom.
He accused the Sovula family of using the claims to shift focus from alleged human rights violations in the area.
Calling for an independent investigation, the MP urged the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to conduct a fair and transparent probe, adding that he is prepared to fully cooperate with investigators.
He expressed confidence that due process would establish the facts and reiterated his commitment to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the interests of his constituents.
