Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Mayor of Freetown, Her Worship Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, narrowly escaped a serious accident on Saturday morning after her official vehicle was struck by a truck.
In a post shared on social media, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr described the day as “tough,” revealing that she was not in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
“Today has been a tough day but in all things we give thanks to God,” she wrote. “My car was hit by a truck this morning in a terrible accident. Thankfully, I wasn’t in the car as the damage was largely on the side where I sit.”
According to the Mayor, tragedy struck again less than half an hour later when her driver received devastating news that his house had caught fire.
“Less than 30 minutes after the accident, my driver received a call informing him that his house was on fire. By the time he got home, the house was completely burnt down, nothing at all was salvaged,” she stated.
Despite the series of misfortunes, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr expressed gratitude that no lives were lost in either incident.
“There have been many tears shed today but I am grateful that no lives were lost and no one is in hospital,” she said, concluding with a message of faith: “It is well. God is in control.”
Authorities have yet to release official details on the cause of the accident and the subsequent fire.
