Port Loko – Marampa Mines Limited (MML) has announced a temporary suspension of its mining operations in Marampa, Loko Masama Chiefdom, Port Loko District.
The decision was contained in a Business Update titled “MARAMPA RESET” issued today, 22nd October 2026, and signed by the General Manager of MML, Angula Kallili and the Chief Executive Officer of Marampa Mines Holdings (MMH), Paul Lombard.
According to the management, the company today submitted a notice of temporary suspension of operations to the Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources.
The company said the suspension is part of its “Marampa Reset” strategy first announced on 22nd September, which is aimed at securing the stability of the business before pursuing further growth.
“Despite this progress, external forces like difficult market conditions, high freight and operating costs, and ongoing operational challenges mean that we must take further steps to protect Marampa’s future,” the statement said.
During the suspension, MML said it will retain only the minimum staff needed on site to protect its licence to operate, maintain essential services and care for its assets. Safety, security, essential power, tailings and water management, environmental protection and necessary maintenance will continue.
“The aim is to keep the mine ready for a return to production when market conditions improve, supported by a fit-for-purpose operating structure and a cost base that allows us to operate profitably and sustainably,” management stated.
The company added that it is preparing a controlled shutdown-readiness plan, covering how activities will stop safely, what work continues, and the staffing and working arrangements required.
Management also noted that high fuel costs mean it is constrained in collecting additional fuel supplies and must conserve available fuel to keep essential services running during the suspension.
On staff welfare, the company acknowledged that the restructuring already underway will continue and that colleagues directly affected will be informed through their Heads of Department and Human Resources.
“These are difficult decisions, and we recognise their impact on employees and their families. Behind every role is a person and a contribution that has helped build Marampa,” the statement said, adding that it remains committed to clear communication, dignity and respect.
The company urged staff to remain calm, follow safety procedures, avoid speculation and support colleagues finding the period difficult.
Marampa Mines is one of Sierra Leone’s largest iron ore producers and a major employer in Port Loko District. Its suspension is expected to have implications for employment, local businesses and government revenue.
