The return of former President Ernest Bai Koroma to Sierra Leone has generated significant public interest across the country, with many Sierra Leoneans viewing the development as an important moment in the nation’s political and democratic journey.
Among those whose views are being closely followed is Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, a prominent lawyer, public figure and political commentator who has consistently spoken about issues of democracy, governance, national development and the rule of law.
Former President Ernest Bai Koroma returned to Sierra Leone after spending more than two years in Nigeria. His departure from Sierra Leone followed the political and legal developments surrounding the November 2023 attempted coup, after which he faced treason-related charges. Those charges were subsequently dropped in July 2026, clearing the way for his return home.
For Dr. Abdulai, the former President’s return should be viewed beyond political party lines. It presents an opportunity for Sierra Leoneans to reflect on the importance of peace, reconciliation, the rule of law and national cohesion.
The return of a former Head of State is never an ordinary political event. Koroma served as President of Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2018, making his return a significant moment for the country’s political history.
Dr. Abdulai’s position, understood in the broader context of his longstanding advocacy for democratic values and citizens’ rights, points toward the need for Sierra Leoneans to place national interest above political differences. His record of speaking on governance and democratic accountability has often emphasized the importance of institutions, justice and citizens’ rights.
The former President’s return also comes at a time when Sierra Leone needs continued efforts toward national dialogue and reconciliation. Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who saw Koroma off in Abuja, described the return as an opportunity for renewed hope and reconciliation for Koroma, his family and the people of Sierra Leone.
The moment therefore provides Sierra Leone with an opportunity to look forward rather than remain permanently divided by the political disputes of the past.
For Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, the bigger question should not simply be which political party benefits from Ernest Bai Koroma’s return. Rather, the focus should be on what the development means for Sierra Leone’s peace, democracy, stability and future.
As Koroma returns home, the country now has another opportunity to demonstrate that political disagreements can be managed through dialogue, constitutional institutions and respect for the rule of law.
Sierra Leone’s future, ultimately, belongs to all Sierra Leoneans. And the return of a former President can become not a source of division, but a moment for reflection, reconciliation and renewed commitment to national unity.
