Lungi – Sierra Leone is putting its best foot forward as the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre stands ready to host the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government on Saturday, 19th July 2026.
President Dr Julius Maada Bio, in his capacity as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, on Thursday visited the newly completed world-class facility in Lungi, where he expressed deep satisfaction with the impressive infrastructure.
The President described the centre as a “cutting-edge facility” and took pride in the hard work and dedication that went into its construction. “I am proud of our collective achievements,” he stated, adding that he is looking forward to engaging in fruitful discussions and welcoming regional leaders and guests with the warm and magnificent Salone hospitality that Sierra Leone is known for.
This summit marks a proud moment for the nation as Sierra Leone hosts high-level ECOWAS meetings under President Bio’s chairmanship.
On Friday, 18th July, the President is expected to officially commission the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre and the new ECOWAS Logistics Depot – facilities that will not only serve this summit but position Sierra Leone as a preferred destination for major international conferences in the sub-region.
Preparatory meetings leading to the summit are already taking place in Freetown. These include sessions of the Administration and Finance Committee, the Mediation and Security Council, and the Council of Ministers, which are bringing together ministers, senior officials, and delegates from across West Africa.
The hosting of the 69th ECOWAS Summit is seen as a major diplomatic achievement for Sierra Leone and a clear demonstration of the progress the country has made under President Bio’s leadership.
The new conference centre in Lungi, strategically located near the international airport, is expected to boost tourism, create employment opportunities, and enhance the country’s image as a stable and capable regional player.
As ECOWAS continues to tackle important regional issues including security, economic integration, and institutional reforms, Sierra Leone is ready to play its part in strengthening West African unity and cooperation.
