Freetown, Sierra Leone — The main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) has deferred its much-anticipated constituency-level elections, originally set for Saturday, July 4, 2026, to Saturday, July 11, 2026.
The party announced the one-week adjustment in a public notice, attributing the decision to a consultative meeting with the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) and a formal advisory note issued by the commission on July 2, 2026.
In the statement, APC National Secretary General Lansana Dumbuya, Esq., reassured party members that the postponement does not reflect any weakening of the party’s commitment.
“The National Leadership wishes to reassure every APC member that this adjustment in the electoral timetable does not diminish our resolve. Rather, it reflects our enduring commitment to conducting elections that are peaceful, credible, inclusive, and worthy of the confidence reposed in our great Party,” Dumbuya said.
The party emphasized that the brief delay is necessary to finalize internal engagements and administrative processes. It called on all aspirants, delegates, and members to remain calm, law-abiding, and focused as preparations continue for the rescheduled polls.
Context Within APC’s Internal Election Cycle
This postponement forms part of the APC’s broader efforts to reorganize at the grassroots level ahead of its national delegates’ conference. The party has been conducting lower-level elections, including ward-level polls earlier in 2026, as it rebuilds structures following the contentious 2023 general elections.
The APC, which has historically been one of Sierra Leone’s dominant political forces alongside the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), continues to navigate internal dynamics and regulatory oversight from the PPRC. The commission plays a key role in ensuring compliance with political party rules and mediating disputes.
Lansana Dumbuya, a prominent figure within the party, has faced significant public attention in recent months, including legal challenges earlier in 2026 related to public statements. His current role in steering the party’s organizational processes underscores the APC’s focus on internal stability.
Broader Political Landscape
The rescheduling comes amid ongoing national conversations about electoral reforms in Sierra Leone. These include recommendations from the Cross-Party Committee on Electoral Systems and Management Bodies Review, aimed at enhancing transparency and trust in the country’s democratic processes following the 2023 polls.
The party has made voter and candidate registers publicly available for transparency, inviting scrutiny and participation from members.
