Accra, June 30, 2026 — The Sierra Leone High Commission in Ghana has moved quickly to support its citizens following devastating floods triggered by heavy rains that struck the capital on Sunday, June 29.
High Commissioner Mohamed Hassan Kaisamba, in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Community in Ghana led by interim head Adams Jah, coordinated assessments to verify the well-being of Sierra Leonean nationals across affected areas.
According to the High Commission, the majority of contacted citizens are safe. However, one elderly Sierra Leonean woman and her family living on New Market Road in Bawdjiase suffered significant losses when floodwaters breached their fence and submerged their home, destroying property. The family was rescued and has since been relocated to safety, staying with another Sierra Leonean household.
In a statement, High Commissioner Kaisamba expressed solidarity with Ghana and conveyed Sierra Leone’s condolences to the government and people affected by the disaster.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones and with all those whose homes, livelihoods, and personal belongings have been affected by this unfortunate disaster,” he said.
Kaisamba also praised the Ghanaian government, emergency response agencies, security services, volunteers, and humanitarian organizations for their rapid and dedicated rescue and recovery operations.
The High Commission reiterated Sierra Leone’s commitment to standing with Ghana, its longstanding partner, and pledged ongoing cooperation with local authorities and stakeholders during the recovery period.
“Through compassion and collaboration, affected communities will recover and emerge stronger,” Kaisamba emphasized.
