The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has announced plans to set up an inter-agency investigative committee to determine the cause of a series of fire outbreaks at Nyapui School for Girls in Kenema, following the fourth fire incident recorded at the institution within five months.
The latest blaze, which occurred on 11 June 2026, destroyed a major administrative block containing the Principal’s Office, Computer Laboratory, administrative offices, and temporary classrooms that had been accommodating students affected by previous fire incidents.
During an assessment visit to the school on 13 June, NDMA Director General, John Vandy Rogers, described the recurring fires as a serious concern and said the proposed investigation would involve security agencies, environmental authorities, local stakeholders, and other relevant institutions to establish the facts surrounding the incidents and recommend appropriate measures.
“The repeated occurrence of fires at the same institution requires a comprehensive and coordinated investigation,” Rogers reportedly stated during the visit. The committee is expected to examine possible causes of the incidents and propose preventive strategies to safeguard the school community.
School authorities said the repeated disasters have had a devastating impact on the institution, severely affecting classroom space, boarding facilities, and the welfare of both students and staff. The destruction of key infrastructure has also disrupted teaching and learning activities.
The latest incident adds to a string of fires that have plagued the school since February. On 3 February 2026, a major fire destroyed part of the school’s boarding hostel, displacing students and prompting emergency relief support from the NDMA. No fatalities were reported, although the incident caused significant damage to accommodation facilities.
Another fire outbreak was reported on 25 May, when flames damaged a section of a dormitory building and destroyed students’ personal belongings. Security personnel and community members managed to contain the fire before it spread further, and no casualties were recorded.
In response to the latest disaster, the NDMA has pledged to engage development partners and relevant stakeholders to support recovery efforts, rebuild damaged facilities, and restore normal learning conditions at the school. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to uncovering the cause of the recurring fires and ensuring the safety of students and staff.
The repeated incidents have raised concerns among parents, guardians, and residents of Kenema, with many calling for a thorough investigation and stronger fire prevention measures to protect one of the region’s leading girls’ schools.
