A video showing a Sierra Leone Police officer allegedly slapping and striking a commercial tricycle (keke) rider with a stick in Freetown on Saturday evening has sparked widespread debate on social media, with many users expressing concern over the officer’s conduct while others defended his actions as an attempt to enforce traffic regulations.
In the viral footage, the officer is seen confronting the keke rider and allegedly using physical force while also making abusive and threatening remarks.
The incident has generated mixed reactions online, with critics condemning what they describe as excessive use of force and unprofessional behavior by a law enforcement officer. Others, however, argued that keke riders are often accused of violating traffic laws and evading police instructions, and praised the officer for taking action against perceived indiscipline on the roads.
The video has rapidly circulated across Facebook, WhatsApp and other social media platforms, reigniting discussions about police conduct, accountability and the relationship between law enforcement officers and commercial transport operators in the capital.
As of Sunday, the Sierra Leone Police had not issued an official statement regarding the incident or indicated whether any disciplinary measures would be taken against the officer involved. The force has, in recent years, faced public scrutiny over allegations of excessive force and the treatment of civilians during enforcement operations.
The incident has also renewed calls from some members of the public for improved professionalism and adherence to human rights standards during police interactions with motorists and commercial transport operators.
Authorities are yet to confirm the circumstances that led to the confrontation, including whether the keke rider had committed any traffic offence before the altercation occurred.
