Freetown, Sierra Leone – President Julius Maada Bio on Tuesday received former Nigerian President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan at State House in Freetown for high-level discussions on peace, stability, and democratic governance in West Africa.
The meeting is being viewed as an important step in strengthening bilateral ties and regional cooperation within the ECOWAS sub-region.
Dr. Jonathan, who visited in his capacity as Special Envoy of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, also serves on key regional platforms promoting democracy and good governance. He took to social media shortly after the meeting to share details of the engagement.
“I paid a special visit to His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio. Our discussions focused on issues of mutual interest and matters relating to peace, stability, democratic governance, and regional cooperation within the West African sub-region,” Jonathan stated.
He further expressed gratitude to President Bio, saying: “I deeply appreciate President Bio for the warm reception, gracious hospitality, and conviviality extended to me during our fruitful engagements.”
The visit comes at a time when both countries continue to play active roles in promoting stability across West Africa, particularly amid ongoing political and security challenges in the sub-region.
This engagement is seen by many Sierra Leoneans as further evidence of President Bio’s active diplomacy on the regional stage, building on Sierra Leone’s long-standing reputation as a beacon of peace and democracy in Africa.
