The Government of Sierra Leone has announced plans to commemorate the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary with a series of modest but meaningful activities centered on unity and reflection.
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Press Secretary at State House in Freetown, the anniversary will be observed on Monday, 27 April 2026, under the theme: “Building a Responsive, Resilient and Cohesive Sierra Leone.”
President Julius Maada Bio has directed that this year’s celebrations be held in a restrained but deeply significant manner. Central to the observance will be an interfaith service at State House on the morning of Independence Day, bringing together religious leaders and citizens to pray for national unity, gratitude, and continued progress.
In the lead-up to the anniversary, Muslims across the country have been encouraged to offer prayers on Friday, 24 April, while Christians are invited to dedicate Sunday, 26 April, to praying for the nation. The initiative is aimed at fostering collective reflection and strengthening national cohesion.
The statement emphasised that as Sierra Leone marks 65 years of independence, citizens should reflect on the country’s resilience and unity. It also called on Sierra Leoneans to renew their commitment to peace, hard work, and compassion as the nation continues its path toward development.
The government expressed hope that the anniversary will inspire a renewed sense of purpose and solidarity among citizens.
