Freetown, Sierra Leone – In a stern move to enforce political decorum, the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) has imposed hefty penalties on the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party following controversial statements made during a recent gathering.
On Monday, February 2, 2026, the commission announced fines totaling 350,000 Leones against the APC for breaches of the Political Parties Act of 2022. Specifically, a 200,000 Leone penalty was levied for violations under Section 39(1)(c) attributed to National Secretary General Lansana Dumbuya Esq., while a 150,000 Leone fine targeted Zainab Sheriff for infractions under Section 39(1)(d).
The infractions occurred amid the APC’s large-scale “Mammoth” rally at Freetown’s Atouga Mini Stadium on Saturday, January 31, 2026. PPRC officials described the remarks in question as “profane, obscene, provocative, and inciting,” raising alarms about their potential to stir unrest.
This action follows a prior warning issued by the commission via a letter dated November 11, 2025, which had already flagged the party’s non-compliance with Section 39 of the Act. Despite the caution, the PPRC expressed deep disappointment over the persistence of such conduct.
The APC has been granted a seven-day window to settle the fines, with the commission warning that failure to comply will trigger additional measures outlined in the legislation.
Party representatives have yet to respond publicly to the sanctions, which come at a time of heightened political tensions in the country.
