Freetown, August 26, 2025 – The Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) has introduced strict load limits on the Old Railway Line Bridge at Brookfields following concerns over its worsening condition.
In a public notice released on Tuesday, the Authority said only cars and light vans weighing up to four tons will be permitted to use the bridge until further notice. Heavy-duty trucks and larger vehicles have been barred from accessing the route.
The SLRA disclosed that retrofitting work will soon commence to strengthen the structure and restore it for normal use. To enforce the new rules, physical barriers will be installed at the site to restrict entry to vehicles that fall within the approved weight category.
Motorists were urged to comply with the directive to ensure safety and avoid disruptions.
“We regret any inconvenience this may cause road users,” the statement noted, stressing that the measure is essential to protect lives and prolong the lifespan of the bridge.
The Old Railway Line Bridge has long been a vital link for motorists, with many calling for its rehabilitation in recent years
