Freetown, 25 April 2025 – The Government of Sierra Leone has declared Monday, 28th April 2025, a public holiday in commemoration of the country’s 64th Independence Anniversary, which falls on Sunday, 27th April 2025.
The announcement was made in a public notice issued from the Office of the President at State House, Tower Hill, Freetown.
Sierra Leone gained independence from British colonial rule on 27th April 1961. The historic day marked the beginning of self-governance for the West African nation, as it transitioned from a British colony to a sovereign state. Sir Milton Margai became the country’s first Prime Minister, leading the newly independent nation with aspirations for unity and development.
Since then, Independence Day has been observed annually with various national celebrations, including parades, cultural displays, and official ceremonies reflecting on the country’s journey, challenges, and achievements.
This year’s observance will mark 64 years since that significant milestone, and the public holiday on Monday aims to allow citizens across the country to participate in commemorative activities.
