Kingtom, Freetown – 14 August 2025 — The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. William Fayia Sellu, has unveiled an ambitious set of development plans for the Kingtom Police Hospital, including the construction of a morgue, the launch of an eye clinic, and an upcoming free surgical campaign.
The ceremony, held at the hospital grounds, marked the turning of the sod for the new morgue. Speaking at the event, Deputy Director and Medical Superintendent ASP Dr. John Mumuneh Konteh outlined the threefold purpose of the gathering: the groundbreaking for the morgue, the commissioning of the eye clinic, and the announcement that a team of Spanish doctors will arrive on 19 September 2025 to conduct free surgeries.
Dr. Konteh commended the IGP for his commitment to improving the hospital’s facilities.
In his keynote address, IGP Sellu thanked the hospital staff for their dedication despite limited resources in the past.
He recalled the hospital’s deplorable condition before his tenure and said that upon becoming IGP, he tasked the medical team with transforming the facility.
“Today, the hospital has grown into a teaching hospital,” he said. “We no longer only serve police personnel and their families — the wider community is also benefiting from our services.”
He credited the Spanish medical team for helping establish a state-of-the-art operating theatre and said the hospital now performs most laboratory tests in-house. Plans are underway to acquire an X-ray machine and scanning equipment to make the facility more self-sufficient.
Looking ahead, IGP Sellu announced aspirations to establish a nursing school at the hospital, describing it as a natural next step given the calibre of staff now in place.
The IGP also shared his long-held vision for a police hospital morgue, saying he was delighted when Dr. Konteh informed him that a mortuary refrigerator had been secured.
“Senior medical professionals now regard this hospital as a top-tier facility,” he noted, urging staff to work as a united team.
Chief Medical Examiner and Chief Superintendent of Police Dr. Simeon Owiz Koroma also addressed the gathering, praising IGP Sellu’s leadership and support for the Ministry.
He encouraged officers to rally behind the IGP, whom he described as “a gem.”
The ceremony concluded with IGP Sellu turning the sod for the morgue site and unveiling the mortuary refrigerator.
