A peaceful protest against President Trump’s federal immigration policy escalated into clashes with police on Highland Avenue.
Thousands gathered to express concerns over potential deportations of undocumented immigrants, including those without criminal records. The demonstration featured fireworks, motorcycles, and a street takeover before authorities declared it unlawful.
Violet, an immigration activist, observed the diverse crowd, stating, “I see a lot of youth which I’m happy to see here that are out here supporting. I see a lot of families with kids. I see a lot of older people as well.”
She emphasized the protesters’ mission: “We’re here to speak for the people who cannot speak, and we’re here to stand up for their rights.”
The protest was in response to statements from Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, indicating that undocumented individuals are at risk of deportation, even without criminal records.
Janeth Manriquez, an attendee, shared her emotional response: “You know, we spent almost every day this week crying, honestly. But we can’t, we have to have a lot of faith.”
The administration asserts that these actions are part of a broader strategy to send a clear message on immigration enforcement. Protesters acknowledged receiving this message and voiced their opposition through the demonstration.
