Operations to clear illegal structures, street garages and abandoned vehicles continued on Monday, 12 January 2026, along major streets in Central Freetown, including Mend, Earl, Prince, Duke, Queen and Albert Streets.
The exercise is being led by the Director of Operations, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) John Martin Senesie, with support from the Local Unit Commander of the Central Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) John Fayiah Tumbay, and other operational personnel.
The ongoing operation focuses on the removal of illegal garages, unauthorised structures and abandoned vehicles that have for long obstructed public roads and pedestrian walkways.
The initiative forms part of the vision of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr William Fayia Sellu, to restore order, improve traffic flow and enhance public safety within the Central Business District of Freetown.
During the operation, it was discovered that several abandoned vehicles had been converted into makeshift refuse dumps and, in some cases, served as hideouts and hubs for criminal activities, thereby posing serious security and public health risks.
The operation is aimed at promoting sanity, environmental cleanliness and public safety, while ensuring that roads and rights of way are kept free for lawful use by motorists and pedestrians.
The Director of Operations has assured the public that the exercise will continue until all illegal structures and abandoned vehicles are removed from the streets of Central Freetown.
He further called on residents and business owners to cooperate fully with the police in the interest of safety and public order.
