Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has announced a critical public hearing scheduled for Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. in the Conference Hall of the Administrative Building.
The hearing aims to scrutinize financial management and operational practices within Sierra Leone’s sports sector from 2020 to 2024.
The hearing will focus on the National Sports Authority (NSA), the Ministry of Finance (MoF), the Accountant General’s Department (AGD), and travel agencies involved in sports-related activities.
According to Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh, Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the PAC, the session seeks to ensure accountability in public funds.
“This hearing is part of our mandate to uphold financial discipline and transparency in Sierra Leone’s public institutions,” Hon. Conteh stated. “We are determined to uncover how resources meant for sports development were allocated and utilized during this period.”
Key Individuals Summoned
Several key individuals and organizations have been summoned to appear before the PAC, including:
– The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports
– The Executive Director and former Executive Director of the NSA
– The Managing Directors of Star Travel Agency and Cinderella Travel & Tours
– The Ambassador of Sports
– Members of the technical team of the Leone Stars national football team, including coaches and assistants
Documents Required
In preparation for the hearing, the PAC has requested specific documents to be submitted by December 17. These include:
– Records of player bonuses for the Leone Stars
– Lists of sports competitions from 2020 to 2024
– Disbursement schedules
– Procedures for purchasing air tickets
The technical team of the Leone Stars is also expected to provide detailed reports on player selection processes, fitness assessments, training methodologies, and team integration strategies.
Consequences for Non-Compliance
The PAC has issued a stern warning that failure to comply with the summons may result in further parliamentary actions. “We expect full cooperation from all parties involved. Any failure to provide the requested documents or attend the hearing will not be taken lightly,” Hon. Conteh emphasized.
