Freetown, 31 July 2025 — The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has issued a public advisory warning of potentially dangerous weather conditions over the next three days, as Sierra Leone braces for heavy rainfall from July 30 to August 2, 2025.
According to the NDMA, the alert is based on recent forecasts from the African Union’s Climate Centre (ACMAD/OCHA), which are consistent with projections from the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet).
The agencies anticipate deep convective cloud activity, bringing cumulative rainfall between 100mm and 150mm over a five-day period across the country and parts of the West African region.
“This level of rainfall could trigger flash floods, landslides, and serious damage to infrastructure—especially in urban areas where drainage systems are poor,” said NDMA stated. “Coastal and hillside communities, erosion-prone slopes, and neighborhoods with blocked waterways are especially vulnerable.”
The NDMA is urging citizens living in high-risk zones—such as floodplains, riverbanks, or unstable hillsides—to consider temporary relocation** during this period. Residents are also advised to clear gutters and waterways to reduce localized flooding.
“We’re calling on all Sierra Leoneans to take proactive measures,” the agency stated. “It is crucial that households and communities work together to keep drains open and report any emergencies immediately.”
Citizens can reach the NDMA’s emergency response team by dialling the toll-free line 1199, accessible on all mobile networks.
“This is an early warning,” the agency emphasized. “We are closely coordinating with both the Meteorological Agency and the African Union to monitor developments and respond to incidents as they arise.”
The NDMA concluded by encouraging the public to remain vigilant and prioritize safety throughout the expected rainfall period.
