Sierra Leonean forward Mustapha Bundu was the star of the show as Plymouth Argyle pulled off a surprise 3-1 victory against Coventry City in England’s Sky Bet Championship on Saturday.
The win, Plymouth’s third consecutive triumph at home, keeps their hopes of survival alive – even though they remain at the bottom of the league table.
Bundu netted twice and assisted another in a performance that lit up Home Park, giving Sierra Leonean fans plenty to cheer about.
Plymouth opened the scoring in the 40th minute through Bundu, who fired in from a tight angle after a clever cut-back from captain Adam Randell. Just three minutes later, Bundu turned provider, sprinting past a defender before delivering a perfect pass to Ryan Hardie, who slotted the ball between the goalkeeper’s legs to make it 2-0.
Coventry pulled one back right before half-time, as Haji Wright smashed in a rebound after a brilliant save from Conor Hazard.
After the break, Coventry searched for an equaliser, but Bundu struck again in the 65th minute. Following a header from teammate Darko Gyabi, Bundu saw his first attempt saved but reacted quickly to nod in the rebound from close range.
The 26-year-old Leone Star, who was also booked in the first half for a foul, continues to make his mark in English football with solid performances.
Plymouth fans will be hoping Bundu’s form can inspire their team to escape relegation as the season nears its end.
