The newly elected Executive Committee of the Sierra Leone Drivers Union has paid a courtesy visit to the Inspector General of Police, Mr William Fayia Sellu, to express gratitude for the security provided by the Sierra Leone Police during the Union’s recent national elections.
The meeting took place at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess, Kingtom.
Welcoming the delegation, IGP Sellu expressed his appreciation for their visit and highlighted the importance of maintaining a strong and collaborative relationship between the Police and the Drivers Union.
He reiterated that the Sierra Leone Police remain committed to working closely with the Union and urged the new executive to uphold the law, emphasising that “no one is above the law.”
The IGP further noted that many disputes between police officers and drivers often arise when officers attempt to carry out their duties.
He stressed that the Police are mandated to enforce the law and ensure public order, and that their role during the Union’s elections was solely to maintain peace and stability, as has always been the case.
Responding on behalf of the Union, the newly elected President, Mr Ibrahim Sam, thanked the IGP and the Police for their vital role in ensuring a peaceful electoral process, free from violence or conflict.
He commended the professionalism of the Sierra Leone Police and assured the Police that the new executive would work hand-in-hand with law enforcement to ensure that commercial drivers adhere to the law.
Mr Sam further stated that mechanisms would be introduced to promote responsibility among drivers, both new and experienced, emphasising that drivers are custodians of lives and property across the nation.
He called for continued mutual respect and appealed for the Police’s understanding in the execution of their duties.
In closing, IGP Sellu stressed that respect must be the foundation of any successful relationship.
“If drivers respect the Police, the Police will certainly respect them in return — respect is reciprocal,” he said. He urged the entire Union to support Mr Ibrahim Sam’s leadership, emphasising that teamwork and discipline are essential for the organisation’s progress.
The visit concluded with a group photograph of the IGP and the new Executive Committee of the Drivers Union, symbolising their shared commitment to strengthening ties between the Union and the Sierra Leone Police.
