President Julius Maada Bio has officially launched Sierra Leone’s first locally developed National Defence Policy and Strategy, describing it as a major step toward strengthening national security and aligning the military with the country’s development priorities.
The launch took place during the 17th Armed Forces Day celebrations at Parade Square, Wilberforce on Wednesday, where the President addressed members of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, government officials, and invited guests.
President Bio said the new policy and strategy provide a clear framework to guide the armed forces in responding to modern security challenges while supporting national development.
He noted that the document aligns with the country’s broader national security priorities and his government’s development agenda.
“The National Defence Policy and Strategy reflects our vision for a professional, capable, and development-oriented military that can effectively protect our sovereignty and contribute meaningfully to national progress,” he stated.
The President emphasized that the policy was developed locally, making it more responsive to the specific realities and needs of Sierra Leone.
He also outlined complementary initiatives aimed at transforming the armed forces into a more productive institution, including the establishment of Defence Enterprise Services and agricultural programmes to support food security.
President Bio concluded by reaffirming his government’s commitment to building a modern and professional military capable of safeguarding peace, stability, and democratic governance for future generations.
