Freetown, Sierra Leone – President Julius Maada Bio has announced sweeping measures aimed at strengthening peace and reconciliation under the Agreement for National Unity (ANU).
In a statement issued on Thursday, the government confirmed it had formally cleared individuals listed by the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) as being in self-exile or hiding due to political activities.
Following consultations with the Office of National Security, the Sierra Leone Police, and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, authorities concluded that none of the listed individuals are subjects of criminal investigation. They are now free to return and resume normal life without restrictions.
In a separate move, President Bio exercised his constitutional powers to grant pardons to several convicted persons, including APC’s Sheriff. While some pardons were linked to political considerations under the ANU framework, others involved individuals convicted of criminal offences. All decisions were based on recommendations from the Pardon Committee, chaired by Vice President Dr Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh.
The President called on those cleared or pardoned to “use this opportunity to foster peace, national cohesion, and contribute to Sierra Leone’s development,” reaffirming his government’s commitment to building a united and harmonious nation.
