In a recent development, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has taken decisive action against alleged corruption within the West African Examination Council (WAEC).
An official statement from the ACC indicates that an indictment has been filed against Salam Salim Sheriff, identified as a Computer Programmer at WAEC, and Aminata Kamara a whose address remains unknown.
The indictment, which spans Three (3) counts of corruption offences, includes charges such as Conspiracy to Commit a Corruption Offence, Engaging in Academic Malpractice, and Abuse of Office.
These charges are in violation of Sections 128 (1), 128 (3), and 42 (1) respectively, of the Anti-Corruption Act No.12 of 2008, as amended by the Anti-Corruption (Amendment) Act No. 9 of 2019.
According to the details provided, Salam Salim Sheriff and Aminata Kamara allegedly colluded with unidentified individuals to tamper with the grades of Aminata Kamara in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) 2020. The incident is reported to have occurred between the 1st of June 2019 and the 31st of May 2021, within Freetown, Western Area of Sierra Leone.
Salam Salim Sheriff is slated to appear in the High Court of Sierra Leone, scheduled for the 22nd of February, 2024.
Meanwhile, Aminata Kamara remains at large and will be subject to trial in absentia, in accordance with Section 89 (7) (a) of the Anti-Corruption (Amendment) Act No. 9 of 2019.
