Freetown, Sierra Leone — The Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) has announced the immediate closure of the Old Railway Line Bridge at Brookfields, Freetown, effective Saturday, August 1, 2026.
In a press release issued on Thursday, 30 July 2026, the authority said the decision follows a recent experts’ inspection that revealed significant deterioration of critical structural elements of the bridge.
Officials described the structure as unsuitable for use and said the closure is a precautionary measure undertaken solely to safeguard lives and property.
The bridge will remain closed until necessary rehabilitation or reconstruction works restore it to a safe, serviceable, and fit-for-purpose condition.
SLRA advised members of the public to comply with all traffic control measures and use designated alternative routes.
The Sierra Leone Police, the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority, and other relevant agencies will provide traffic management and enforce the closure.
“SLRA regrets the inconvenience this necessary action may cause and appreciates the public’s understanding and cooperation as we work to restore this important infrastructure,” the statement said.
Motorists and residents who regularly use the Brookfields crossing are urged to plan alternative routes in advance of the closure.
