Kenema, Sierra Leone – April 12, 2026 — Key stakeholders in Kenema convened yesterday, April 11, 2026, at the private residence of Mayor Thomas Karimu Baio to discuss reconciliation efforts and potential next steps in the high-profile case involving popular Sierra Leonean rapper Alhaji Amadu Bah, widely known as Boss LAJ.
The closed-door meeting, chaired by DJ Snow (Tidae), CEO of Karima Investment and a prominent local businessman, opened with a minute of silence to set a tone of calm reflection before deliberations began.
Opinions among participants were sharply divided. Some attendees advocated for forgiveness, noting that LAJ had already issued a public apology in court and written a formal apology letter expressing regret over his remarks. Others urged caution, arguing that it was premature to settle the matter, especially amid lingering concerns about the seriousness of the alleged insults and possible associated threats.
Fatima, representing the SLPP perspective, emphasized that while forgiveness is a virtue, it should not be rushed without full accountability. In contrast, John Lamin of the Radio Callers Association pushed for a swift resolution, warning that prolonging the issue would waste valuable time and resources that could be better directed elsewhere.
DJ Snow, who has played a mediating role between the parties, acknowledged the difficulty of balancing emotions on both sides but reaffirmed support for whatever final position Mayor Baio adopts.
Mayor Baio, widely regarded in local circles as one of Sierra Leone’s most dynamic city leaders, was unequivocal in his stance. He stated clearly that he is not seeking financial compensation but genuine accountability. His outlined conditions for any potential out-of-court resolution include:
– LAJ signing a formal undertaking.
– A comprehensive public apology, including a video statement and radio broadcasts specifically targeting audiences in Kenema.
– The possibility of a ban on LAJ performing in the Eastern Region.
The atmosphere turned emotional when supporters and family members of LAJ knelt and pleaded for mercy. While their appeals were heard, no immediate commitments were made.
Background of the Case
The controversy stems from an incident on March 21, 2026, during a live performance in Bo City. Prosecutors allege that LAJ made highly derogatory and insulting remarks against Mayor Baio, including referring to him as a “bastard child” which were captured on video and circulated widely on social media. LAJ and co-accused Ibrahim Koroma (Prezo Koroma) face multiple counts under the Cyber Security and Crime Act, 2021, related to cyberbullying, insulting conduct, and causing unnecessary anxiety.
LAJ, who also serves as a government-appointed Peace Ambassador, has since tendered public apologies in court (including a symbolic kneeling gesture) and written a formal letter of regret. Despite these efforts, Magistrate Samuel James Brima has ruled that the criminal proceedings must continue according to law.
The case has been adjourned several times, with both men currently remanded at the Bo Male Correctional Centre. The next court hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, 2026.
Mayor Baio made it clear during yesterday’s meeting that any release or settlement is not guaranteed at the upcoming hearing, underscoring that the decision rests with the court while he prioritizes respect and accountability for the office of the Mayor and the people of Kenema.
