FREETOWN, Sierra Leone — Kissy Ferry Terminal emerged winner of the 2026 National Coastal Unity Boat Race, defeating strong contenders from Susan’s Bay and Moa Wharf in a closely contested competition that brought together 16 coastal communities across the capital.
The event, held at Lumley and Aberdeen Beach, was organised by the GEED Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs as part of efforts to promote national unity, youth engagement, and tourism development.
The race attracted a large audience, including government officials, development partners, youth groups, and residents, who gathered along the coastline to witness the event.
Chief Executive Officer of the GEED Foundation, Dr. Ekundayo Walton Gilpin, described the initiative as a platform that extends beyond sport, noting its role in fostering collaboration, peace, and cohesion among coastal communities.
Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis, underscored the importance of leveraging Sierra Leone’s coastal assets to drive tourism and create economic opportunities, particularly for young people.
She said the initiative aligns with the government’s broader strategy to position the country as a leading tourism destination in West Africa while preserving cultural heritage.
Participants commended the organisers and partners for staging what they described as a meaningful and engaging event. They highlighted the value of community-based competitions in promoting talent development, social cohesion, and national progress.
The competition showcased teamwork and cultural identity among participating communities while reinforcing the role of sport and recreation in strengthening partnerships and advancing development goals.
Organisers said the success of the event demonstrates the potential of combining sport, culture, and tourism to support unity and economic growth, with Sierra Leone’s coastline serving as a key national asset.
