Freetown, Sierra Leone – In a move that could shape the future of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), National Secretary General Hon. Umar Paran Tarawally has revealed that just seven individuals meet the strict criteria to vie for the party’s flag bearer position in the lead-up to the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on the party’s August 2020 Constitution, Tarawally emphasized that eligibility under the Distinguished Grand Chief Patron category is reserved for those with proven long-term commitment.
The shortlist includes prominent figures: Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, Dr. Prince Alex Harding, Umaru Napoleon Koroma, Sulaiman Banja Tejan-Sie, Jacob Jusu Saffa, John Oponjo Benjamin, and Alhaji Momodu Koroma.
“These individuals have not only held the Distinguished Grand Chief Patron status for at least five years but have also consistently fulfilled their financial obligations to the party over that period or longer,” Tarawally stated, underscoring the constitution’s emphasis on dedication and service.
Qualification for this elite category requires prior high-level roles within the SLPP, such as party leader, deputy leader, national chairman, or national secretary general. Alternatively, candidates must have previously run as the party’s presidential or vice-presidential nominee.
This announcement comes amid growing speculation about internal party dynamics as Sierra Leone prepares for its next electoral cycle. Political analysts suggest it may streamline the selection process but could also spark debates over inclusivity within the SLPP ranks.
The party has yet to confirm timelines for internal nominations, but Tarawally’s comments signal a focused approach to leadership succession.
