Freetown – The National Executive Council (NEC) of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) held a critical meeting at its headquarters on Wallace Johnson Street to address key party issues, including governance and election preparations.
During the meeting, the NEC announced a six-month extension of the tenure of the party’s executive bodies at all levels. This decision affects Sectional, Zonal, Constituency, District, Branch, Regional, and National levels and aims to provide sufficient time for internal elections to be conducted.
The Council instructed the National Executive to submit a detailed timeline for lower-level elections, along with the corresponding rules and regulations, by the second week of January 2025.
In addition, the NEC reaffirmed its commitment to reviewing the SLPP’s August 2020 constitution, following input from regional and other party stakeholders. The review process will align with both the party’s constitution and the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone.
Strict directives were also issued concerning the party’s leadership or flagbearer campaign. The NEC banned any member from campaigning for the position until official authorization is granted. Leaders at various levels—regional, district, constituency, chiefdom, zonal, and sectional—were instructed to ensure that party resources are not misused for unauthorized campaigns.
“Any member found violating these directives will face serious disciplinary actions, including disqualification,” the resolution warned.
The NEC further called on members to focus on fostering unity within the party and maintaining peace and stability in the country, especially as the next electoral cycle approaches.
The resolutions were signed and issued by Umaru Napoleon Koroma Esq., the National Secretary-General of the SLPP.
