In a notable legal victory, Jeneba Mado Kamara has been awarded Le 100,000 (One Hundred Thousand New Leones) or One Billion Old Leones in compensation following a court ruling against the University of Makeni (UNIMAK).
The decision, delivered by Hon. Justice Mohamed Bawoh, came after Kamara was unfairly barred from graduating on March 16, 2024, a move she attributed to alleged negligence and personal grudges by university staff.
Kamara had been vocal about the injustice, criticizing the university for failing to adhere to the principles of Natural Justice, the Universities Act 2021, and the Constitution of Sierra Leone Act No. 6 of 1991.
“They punished me without applying the law of Natural Justice and the Universities Act 2021, as well as the Constitution of Sierra Leone Act No. 6 of 1991,” she stated in a post shared on social media.
The court found the university’s defense and counter-claims to be without merit, leading to a decisive ruling in Kamara’s favor.
The significant monetary award underscores the court’s stance on upholding fairness and accountability within educational institutions.
“This victory has not only brought me justice but has also highlighted the importance of standing up for what is right,” Kamara shared. She thanked her supporters and emphasized the need for fairness and accountability in educational institutions.
Kamara’s victory not only secures her compensation but also sets a precedent for transparency and justice in Sierra Leone’s academic sector.
