In a major security operation, Sierra Leone’s intelligence, military, and police forces have successfully intercepted a significant consignment of bomb-making materials and illegal drugs.
The operation, which unfolded over several days in early July, has led to the arrest of seven individuals.
“Intelligence officials uncovered a plot involving suspects importing bomb-making materials into the country,” the Ministry of Information and Civic Education stated in a press release issued today.
The joint operation targeted multiple locations in and around the Western Area on Sunday, July 7, 2024, following months of meticulous surveillance.
The materials seized include 12.5 kg empty gas cylinders, high-grade TNT, detonators, firing devices, timers, and other bomb-making components disguised as household items.
“The success of this operation demonstrates our commitment to national security,” said an official involved in the raid.
Further searches on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at the residence of suspect Hussein Antar, led to the discovery of 7,847,100 Captagon pills. These pills, known for their addictive properties, were hidden in refrigerators and air conditioners.
“Captagon is widely used by ISIS and fighters in Syria,” noted the Ministry. The seized drugs have an estimated street value of $94,155,200.
The individuals arrested in connection with this case are Hussein Antar, Jamal Antar, Ibrahim Bashiru Kamara, Samuel Marah, Abdul Aziz Kamara, Alieu Kamara, and Ackmed Bangura. They are currently assisting the police with ongoing investigations.
“We urge anyone with information related to these activities to contact the Sierra Leone police,” the Ministry appealed.
The Ministry of Information and Civic Education further assured the public that the situation is under control and there is no need for panic.
“Timely updates will be provided as investigations continue,” the Ministry emphasized, reinforcing the government’s dedication to maintaining public safety.
