Sierra Leonean football, the national team’s head coach, Mohamed Kallon, has rallied his squad ahead of their crucial FIFA World Cup qualifier against Guinea-Bissau.
This fixture marks a significant step in Sierra Leone’s ongoing quest to secure a maiden appearance at the World Cup finals.
“It’s finally here—match day!” Kallon declared in a spirited message to his players. “I just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone of the hard work and dedication we’ve put into preparing for today. Let’s carry that energy onto the field and play our hearts out. Remember to stay focused, stick to the game plan, support one another, and most importantly, have fun out there! Each of you has something unique to offer, and together we can achieve greatness.”
Kallon, a former Leone Stars captain and one of Sierra Leone’s most celebrated football figures, has been working to instill confidence and discipline in the squad as they navigate a difficult qualification campaign.
Sierra Leone’s path in World Cup qualifiers has historically been challenging. The Leone Stars made their inaugural attempt to qualify on October 15, 1972, facing a narrow 1–0 defeat to Ivory Coast. Despite the hurdles, the Leone Stars remain determined to fight for a place in the tournament.
Defender Abdulai Juma Bah echoed the team’s determination. “We know the challenge ahead, but we are ready to fight for every point. The dream is to see Sierra Leone at the World Cup, and we will do everything to make it happen,” he said confidently.
Veteran striker Kei Kamara, who returned to international duty inspired by Cameroonian legend Roger Milla, has been included in the squad for the upcoming qualifiers against Guinea-Bissau and Egypt. His experience is expected to bolster the team’s attacking options.
Sierra Leone has never qualified for a FIFA World Cup, but recent improvements in the national team’s performance have raised hopes among fans. The team last made a major tournament appearance in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking their return to continental football after a 25-year absence. Now, with Kallon at the helm, there is renewed belief in the squad’s ability to make history.
As the Leone Stars prepare to take on Guinea-Bissau, supporters across the country are rallying behind their team, hoping for a performance that keeps Sierra Leone’s World Cup dreams alive.
